About the Auction

In the fall of 2008, trustees and senior staff of George Eastman House decided to revisit a form of fundraising that has not been attempted by the Museum since 1977: a photography auction. This effort began as a tiny seed and rapidly eclipsed all other fundraisers in the Museum’s history. We chose to approach the process with full transparency via Close Up—our award-winning member newsletter—and this website dedicated to the auction effort, through our blog and Facebook, and by asking our community for support, while also having the opportunity to give something back: an expansive compilation of photographs, books, and cameras.

Our call reached those near and far to join an effort to make this auction a success.

Contributions came from photographers, film producers, dealers, collectors, and artists’ estates from six continents and more than 20 countries. Donations have arrived from Japan, Germany, Israel, Australia, the Netherlands, Canada, Mexico, and South Africa, as well as from across the United States and from our hometown of Rochester, NY.

Within these photographs, cameras, and photographic books, almost all genres and aesthetic movements in photography are represented—from the earliest photographic processes such as studio daguerreotype portraits by Southworth and Hawes and a salted paper print by Egyptologist John Beasely Greene; to early innovators such as Paul Everard Outerbridge Jr.; to mid-century street scenes by Louis Faurer and Cornell Capa and abstractions by Aaron Siskind and Carl Chiarenza; fashion photographs by Herb Ritts and Horst P. Horst; to works by such newly established artists as Andrew Moore and Jeffrey Millstein. You will also find prints by masters of 20th-century photography such as Ansel Adams, August Sander, and Edward Weston. Robert Adams, who rose to prominence as a result of the groundbreaking exhibition New Topographics, which was revived and expanded by George Eastman House in 2009, also volunteered a print. The variety included in the auction is notable. Where else could you acquire a walk on the set of Law and Order: Criminal Intent, or a private portrait session with innovative imagemaker Gary Schneider?

The best and brightest in development, connoisseurship, management, and communication were culled from within the walls of our own institution. Individuals from every department were asked to participate in the effort, from soliciting potential donors to producing the catalogue to orchestrating the fine details of the night of the event, totaling nearly 20 individuals in all. This auction effort has come to represent the standard of quality we embrace at George Eastman House, and we couldn’t be more pleased.
